Arte plans worldwide expansion
Article Abstract:
Arte, a Franco-German cultural channel, is requesting for an additional FFr19 million or 2 million pounds sterling in funding from the French and German government to enable it to expand its business in the European and overseas market. Arte, which has a budget of FFr1.795 billion or 185 million pounds sterling in a 50:50: ratio from the two governments, needs the additional funding to form partnerships with other networks in other countries out of Europe, to establish its new headquarters in Strasbourg, France, and to increase its quality programming in Germany, among others.

The start-up costs of the new Channel 5 are expected to include 50-70million pounds sterling to retune all video cassette recorders in viewers' homes. It is estimatedthat around 200-300 million pounds need to be spent before the channel even beginsbroadcasting. According to Kleinwort Benson analyst, Katherine Pelly, Channel 5 will need tospend 350 million pounds over the first three years on programming. An overview of potentialcosts for the new Channel is given.
