Auntie in the 21st century
Article Abstract:
The British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) has managed to keep up its audience share in the 1990's but there are challenges in store with the advent of digital transmission. The BBC has reason for confidence as in 1996 the BBC1/BBC2 audience share at 42-45% was very close to that being achieved in 1986, analogue transmission will continue into the 21st century and there is a partnership deal with Flextech, but the next decade will see many changes. Plans and predictions for the future including the BBC's own, its 1996 policy document 'Extending Choice in the Digital Age', are discussed.

A liberal dash of promise
Article Abstract:
The Independent Television Commission (ITC) experiences great difficulty in ensuring that terrestrial television stations in the United Kingdom, conform to the strategies set out in licence applications. The ITC may impose a fine on a television company that fails to deliver promises made in a licence application, but the fines are paltry compared to television advertising revenues. Some observers fear that the new television channel, Channel 5 Broadcasting, will fail to fulfill its propositions for programming. The ITC maintain that they will continue to monitor programming closely.
