Brits abroad; Pearson Television; patchwork planet
Article Abstract:
Pearson Television is founded on local production in 30 markets, and sees the UK where it is headquartered as yet another local market. Pearson's international emphasis is seen most evidently in its sales statistics. In 1998, the company's total sales were GBP343 million, with 61% of sales coming from the UK. Roughly 70% of the firm's income is generated by local production, and the rest is split between Pearson Television International, a US syndication business, a UK transmission business, and Pearson Television Enterprises.

Crisis out of a drama
Article Abstract:
The poor ratings for the 4 million pounds sterling Channel 4 / Company Pictures production of Anna Karenina do not mean the UK public is no longer interested in adaptations of classic novels. The four part series only got an 8 percent audience share on its best night, but it was up against the popular Bad Girls program. Other period dramas and factors in the Anna Karenina failure are discussed.

Homegrown hits still eluding C5
Article Abstract:
Channel 5's audience share has been lower almost every week than for the corresponding week in 2000, with an overall share of 5.5% and a peak share down to 4.8% from 5.1% in 2000. Stiff competition from BBC 1 and ITV's schedules as well as few original shows in the top 100 programs may be reasons for the decline.
