No light relief for 2
Article Abstract:
Audience ratings show a significant decrease in the popularity of light entertainment (LE) programmes on the UK's BBC2 channel since the late 1980's. The average LE rating since 1991 has dropped from 2.8 million viewers to 1.6 million and the last time it topped 10 million viewers for a single LE programme was in 1987. Total viewing figures for BBC2 have remained fairly static. The reason suggested for the disparity is that BBC2 has neglected its loyal following of older viewers and families in its LE programming in favour of material for younger viewers.

BBC drama dives
Article Abstract:
UK television ratings show the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) reduced its overall audience share for dramas in 1997. The most successful BBC drama continues to be Eastenders, which is broadcast three times a week to an average 61% share of viewers. Drama productions are the only segment of programming which has reported falling shares for the BBC, against its main rival Independent Television. The BBC needs to assess its programming out put for the rest of 1998-1999 to hold on to its share of audience viewers.
