Opinion matters
Article Abstract:
Channel 4 has attempted to introduce innovative television programs in its coverage of the 1997 general election, in order to keep the UK audience interested. In the 1992 election the UK broadcasting industry failed to cover vital parts of party manifestos and concentrated too much time on the opinion polls. Channel 4 has endeavored to include the views of the electorate in its output and hopes to broadcast the outcome of debate with politicians and voters. Channel 4 broadcasters intend to ensure all aspects of the electoral process are shown to the voting public.

Article Abstract:
The diverse membership of the Royal Television Society provides a wide variety of opinions that is the lifeblood of the Society. The regional input of members has created a network outside of London and Cambridge, and many meetings are now held in Southampton. As membership is open to anyone in the television industry, it gives a voice to independent professionals. The Society has broadened its outlook by welcoming multichannel television and acknowledging its contribution to the industry. If the Society is to promote television, all members need to work together.

What chance for the regions, Mr Smith?
Article Abstract:
The mixed situation regarding regional television broadcasting in the UK presents a number of challenges for Secretary of State for the Media Chris Smith. ITV's regional commitment now seems to be in serious doubt, and the BBC is suffering from limited resources and poor morale. It seems that only Channel 4 is really committed to regional broadcasting and to boosting the quality of UK television broadcasting. These problems will get worse as digital broadcasting becomes more firmly established.
