Communicating capitalism: resisting and restructuring state ideology - the case of 'Thatcherism.'
Article Abstract:
Thatcherism in 1980s Britain was defeated on two occasions in spite of the subservience of the national media, revealing the power of local media against political oppression. The government campaign for a poll tax with its corresponding denigration of local government was overcome by a decentralized local media. The assault on statutory welfare with a reemphasis on private charity was beaten by a coalition of local media and organized charities.
