Communications and the constitution of modernity
Article Abstract:
Modernity is a valid and worthwhile concept to analyze, and media theorists should incorporate the social science of communications theory into media studies to elucidate modernity. Modern critics have looked at consumerism as a passing away of life into postmodernism. However, focus on the uses to which communications technology is put can avoid the pitfalls of postmodern despair, determinism or media solipsism. Communication plays an important part in the balance between consumption and modern citizenship.
