Computer communications in cross-border coalition-building North American NGO networking against NAFTA
Article Abstract:
Astudy was conducted to examine the application of John Locke's philosophy of global civil society to international non-governmental (NGO) movements which advocate peace, human rights, social justice and environmental management. The Assn for Progressive Communications, a global computer network, is analyzed forthe communication technology and services it renders to these NGOs. Finally, the NAFTA is evaluated as part of the international computer communication network.

Introduction: why the cultural environment movement?
Article Abstract:
The Cultural Environment Movement was established in response to the increasing control of broadcasting over culture. The movement's first meeting was held from Mar 15-17, 1996 in St. Louis, MO, and was attended by culture and communication activists and leaders. The movements's major goals include the establishment of a coalition made up of councils in the US and abroad and the elimination monopolies over media censorship and ownership.

Mapping the environment: contested physical and cultural terrain in the "Far North."
Article Abstract:
Issues regarding the accuracy of the Exxon Valdez media coverage and of maps used in this coverage are discussed. Literature from cultural geography is used in criticism of this coverage, and a methodology for reading maps and coverage of the oil spill is given, also suggestions for reading media maps in other settings, focusing on their place in fostering social justice and articulating various cultural identities.
