Debatable prospects
Article Abstract:
A recent debate in the UK's House of Commons on the future of the British Broadcasting Corporation shows a real appreciation of the services provided by the public service broadcaster. The BBC's news and current affairs broadcasting was praised by the National Heritage Secretary Stephen Dorrell, who believed that the corporation provided a valuable service to the public. The one dissenting note was provided by Labour MP Gerald Kaufman who said that the BBC's confidence over its future should not make it complacent.

Labour embraces bill
Article Abstract:
The Labour party of the United Kingdom are in general agreement with the move to deregulate the broadcasting industry, although some concerns have been expressed. They are worried that the inevitable increase in the number of channels could be controlled by just a few companies within the broadcasting industry, such as Carlton and Granada. Others are concerned about the quality and content of any additional channels, and call for increased control measures to ensure that taste and decency are maintained.

Praise the lord and pass the bill
Article Abstract:
The British Broadcasting Bill passed its third and final reading in the House of Lords during March 1996 after many peers demonstrated a thorough understanding of the subject. Lord Inglewood was very willing to discuss the bill in its finer detail and obviously understood all aspects of the bill, including its technical involvement. The Labour party's wish to licence analogue encryption services is to be discussed.
