Cable Communications Association chairman and managing director of Diamond Cable Communications Gary Davis does not wish to compete with satellite television but wants provide an alternative service in sport. Davis acknowledges that the industry has not worked well with BSkyB and seeks to improve their relationship. Davis, who is regarded in the industry as being confident and opinionated, will strive to sell the industry's image amidst the heavy competition it's faced with from satellite and telephony companies.

Cable programming directors in the UK are increasingly being faced with difficult decisions about which channels should be carried and which should be dropped in order to make space for more attractive new channels. It is clear that cable is suffering from a great shortage of bandwidth, and this is presenting cable operators with the dilemma of whether to launch untested new channels or remain with established ones which are not necessarily attracting large numbers of viewers.

However, they are now facing strong competition from other cable and satellite channels, and are having to reassess their position.
