Digital dawn
Article Abstract:
The acceptance by the world's broadcasters of the Moving Picture Experts Group's standard for digital compression in 1993 was a milestone in modern television history, allowing more services to be carried by existing frequencies. One of the first broadcasters to launch a digital direct satellite broadcast was DirecTV, launched in the US in 1994. The broadcaster's three satellites can each carry up to 80 channels. Current developments in digital TV technology are discussed.
