Dual leaders for two-headed BBC monster
Article Abstract:
There does not seem to be any obvious successor to replace John Birt when he steps down as head of the BBC. Whoever takes on this job will have to face many serious challenges. It will be necessary to decide whether the BBC is to remain committed to public service broadcasting or become more commercialized, and consideration will have to be given to the Labour party's plans for a radical overhaul of the BBC. It may be advisable to appoint two people with opposing views to head the BBC, allowing them to battle between themselves to determine its future.

Leave the BBC alone - even when it's wrong
Article Abstract:
There have been mixed reactions to remarks by new UK Heritage Secretary Chris Smith which indicate that he believes that the BBC is in danger of becoming excessively bureaucratic. It is certainly possible to agree with this view, but some observers are concerned that the new government has intervened so soon in the management of the BBC, which is supposed to be completely independent. It is very important for the BBC to remain independent, even if this does mean that controversial management decisions have to be tolerated.

BBC suffers radio daze
Article Abstract:
BBC radio broadcasting has lost many listeners to commercial radio stations over recent years, and its managers now realise that they have to take drastic action in order to reverse this trend. This has led to an expensive deal with popular television presenter Chris Evans, who will have a programme on Radio 1FM. At the same time, the BBC has undertaken a number of rationalisation moves in regional radio broadcasting. This clearly reflects the conflict of interests which it is now facing.
