EastEnders faces digital delay
Article Abstract:
BBC's most famous shows that include EastEnders are not likely to be produced in digital-format for a minimum of one and a half years. But 25% of all the peaktime shows in BBC 1 and BBC 2 on the company's new digital services will be aired in widescreen within 1999. BBC's terrestrial digital services will allow the public to view the widescreen coverage of the World Cup at public sites across the UK, mainly in reception areas of BBC headquarters in Glasgow, Belfast and London, UK. BBC's deputy director of television, David Docherty, hoped that half of the principal schedules of BBC 2 and BBC 1 on the company's new digital services would be aired in widescreen by 2000, with 100% of the schedules to be broadcast in widescreen within four or five years.

Jackson takes aim
Article Abstract:
Channel 4 Television Company Ltd, Chief Executive Michael Jackson has the task of fulfilling the needs of minority interests yet ensuring viewer ratings remain high. Some industry observers suggest Jackson found it limiting to no longer have access to the amount of talent and the production facilities he had at the British Broadcasting Corporation. He joined Channel 4 in Jul 1997 and was given around 20 million pounds sterling in extra funds from the UK government. Jackson has a clear plan of how he wants the station to be run and on his appointment several senior staff left Channel 4.
