Squaring up for a digital dogfight
Article Abstract:
There has been a great deal of publicity relating to the planned introduction of digital satellite and cable television broadcasting services in the UK. However, it now seems that the reality is likely to be less dramatic than was originally anticipated. Observers are now pointing out that positive steps must be taken urgently if digital satellite and cable is to be introduced at all in 1997, but BSkyB and leading cable operators have still not signed contracts for the supply of set-top boxes. There is also continuing debate about the likely take-up of digital terrestrial television.

CanWest loses in on ITV shares
Article Abstract:
It is possible that a share exchange will take place between ITV and Canadian broadcaster CanWest Global Communications. Under such a deal, CanWest would be able to establish a relationship with an ITV company. CanWest is believed to be particularly interested in Westcountry Television, which is thought to be preparing for a stock market flotation before the end of 1996, and HTV, which has also attracted interest from Carlton Communications. CanWest has been committed for some years to establishing a presence in the UK.
