From radios libres to radios privees: the rapid triumph of commercial networks in French local radio
Article Abstract:
The rise of private local radio stations in France in the late 1970s proved a false hope, as most have been replaced by commercial network stations. The French experience may offer a model for similar developments in other European nations. Community media advocates will assist in breaking state broadcasting monopolies, only to find themselves overwhelmed by North American-style commercial networks. Public service broadcasting will be performed by the state, not by local stations.

French youth talk radio: the free market and free speech
Article Abstract:
The French feel the need to protect their culture and their language, so talk radio in France has undergone a resurgence in popularity. The banning of English-language songs on the radio has created talk shows for French youth, mostly dealing with topics such as sex and the Nazis in a controversial manner. Since the idea behind radio call-in shows is to give a voice to the ordinary citizen, the job of regulating the French airwaves is a difficult one.

Culture in space: the European cultural channel
Article Abstract:
La SEPT, France's government-run European culture channel is a compromise venture emerging out of concerns that government deregulation of broadcasting would dilute French culture with low-brow product. The government's conception of public service, as presented on La SEPT, is somewhat elitist and apolitical when compared to public broadcasting in Germany or Great Britain.
