Presidential and scandalous
Article Abstract:
Official press coverage by China is highly principled if one were to judge it in the best possible light. This is reflected in the virtual absence of any reference in Chinese newspapers and television pertaining to the Congressional investigation surrounding the scandal between Pres Bill Clinton and former White House intern Monica Lewinsky. The Chinese press appears to be motivated on the precepts that one should not criticize allies, avoid the personal whenever possible and avoid reportage that suggests blatant interference in the domestic affairs of other nations.

Guiding public opinion
Article Abstract:
China's media policy is reflected in the phrase 'guiding public opinion' that can every so often be read in the newspapers or heard in the evening news. The subtle message conveyed in this phrase is clearly and precisely 'report news in the approved manner for no other position shall be tolerated' or better still 'reporting news in the approved fashion will work to one's advantage but wait and see should one insist on any other way.' This brings up the issue of how journalists and writers in China are reconciled to the political objectives of Communist Party leaders.

Chinese media in flux: from Party line to bottom line
Article Abstract:
Chinese journalists are increasingly becoming powerful and are enjoying support from a federal government keen on bolstering the role of mass media as social conscience custodian. This scenario in 1999 would have been unthinkable in 1990. However, continued market reform since about 1988 has eroded the overwhelming influence of the official media while fostering a growing pluralism in news media which the government apparently cannot control.
