In the media, a woman's place
Article Abstract:
Fifteen women and men from the media and other fields discuss issues influencing the media and women in 1993 and beyond. Attitudes toward women have improved, there is increased participation of women in the media, and they are getting greater coverage than before, but serious issues of date rape and sexual harassment are being sensationalized. Men still monopolize decision making in the media, and dramatic changes for women are portrayed as they were in the past.

The media and the year of the woman
Article Abstract:
The 'year of woman,' 1992-93, has shown welcome signs of change, especially for women in the media, but leaves little room for optimism because the old obstacles still persist. None of America's four most prestigious papers have named women as editors in the previous five years. The gender question of news carriage still prevails, stories about women do not get the portrayal they deserve, and women in newsrooms still face several hindrances from the past.

Deciding what's "women's news."
Article Abstract:
Women's news must defined by its appeal to women as a whole, disregarding race or class, and should not be based on present media ideas which project a masculine view of the world. Gender news reporters, editors, and special sections are needed if women's news is to appear in all sections of the media, because this brings hope of equity and essential acceptance of differences in news values and coverage.
