Learning curve
Article Abstract:
BBC Worldwide has launched a Learning division to boost its presence in the international education market. The division's new managing director, John Thomas, believes that the BBC's international reputation is based on its news and knowledge programmes and that there is a good potential for growth in these markets. It is suggested that one of the division's first moves will be to launch an education channel aimed at overseas markets including India, Australia and South Africa.

Efforts to negotiate a global joint venture between the BBC and Discovery Communications are currently experiencing considerable delay. Discovery is having to deal with lawyers representing BBC Broadcast, BBC Worldwide and BBC Production, and it is proving extremely complicated to put together such a large corporate partnership. It is reported that Discovery executives are becoming extremely frustrated by the way in which the BBC is handling the negotiations.
