Leisure runs riot
Article Abstract:
Light entertainment is being revitalised as old formats are updated and new styles are developed. A wealth of game show ideas have come from abroad where shows may not be exactly to UK taste but with adaptation, can be re-formated and shown. Games shows such as Gladiators have been re-styled as Ice Warriors, where games take place on ice. Buyers are on the look out for weekend programming where big game shows are still popular and the popularity of music programmes continues with specials on both the Beatles and the Spice Girls.

The facts of life
Article Abstract:
The growing demand for factual television programmes has been heightened by the approach of the year 2000. At Mipcom 1997 many production companies were marketing programmes with an historical theme, such as Love in the Ancient World, or a science theme, such as Savage Earth. BBC Worldwide's projects include The State of the Planet and American Dream about the history of a US family. Interest has also been increased for real-life drama series such as the BBC's Airport, based on the daily routine of Heathrow Airport, London, UK.

A dramatic mix
Article Abstract:
The variety of programmes on offer at the 1997 Mipcom festival held in Cannes, France, reflects a wider choice from the international market and a more sophisticated audience. There is an increase in science fiction dramas, while British costume dramas, such as Moll Flanders, are selling worldwide. The big hit of 1997 will probably be A Dance to the Music of Time, a 9 million pound sterling Channel 4 production. The surprise BBC 2 cult drama This Life is being marketed by BBC Worldwide and is aimed at 15 to 40 year olds.
