Letter from the future - I: journalism in 2025 isn't pretty
Article Abstract:
It is possible that the job of the reporter as it is currently understood will have disappeared by 2025. By that time, those who wish to gain a permanent job as a reporter may be forced to work for almost nothing for several years first or to exploit family contacts. It is likely that the provision of news will have changed considerably by 2025. News services will provide extremely tailored reporting to reflect many different interests, and advertisers will exert considerable influence over how the facts of news stories are reported.

Does the Internet change news reporting? Not quite
Article Abstract:
Reporters are of two types, namely, mainline and online reporters. Mainline reporters use phones while online reporters use the keyboard through the Internet. However, the Internet can be a place of intrigues, rumor and fabrication, as evidenced by the case Pierre Salinger who used an unsourced tip about a missile bringing down TWA Flight 800 that turned out to be false. The Internet can be a useful medium because of its immediacy or real-time feature. It is one way for information to make its way to the newsroom.

Not yet for the net: but new sites show great promise
Article Abstract:
There is considerable potential for the use of the Internet in politics, but this development is still in its early stages. There are many politics-based Web sites, but many are very uninteresting and contain no information that is not already available in printed form. It seems that direct interaction between politicians and voters will not be possible during the 2000 presidential election campaign. Instead, Web sites are filled up with position papers, speeches and photographs.
