Memory and the transformation of social experience in modern Japan: rethinking the song "Home"
Article Abstract:
Since the 1880s Japanese children have been taught standard songs in school to educate them about their social and political culture. The Japanese 'Primary School Songbook' was published between 1882 and 1884, introducing songs to cultivate children's moral characters. In 1907 the Ministry of Education published their official compilation of songs. The stereotypical, stylized and conventional song "Home" deals with nostalgic memories of an idealized Japanese home.
