Radio and the black soldier during the World War II

Article Abstract:

Radio representations of Black American soldiers during the Second World War had been transmuted to diminish attention on the hypocritical absurdity of a race-torn nation defending the principles of democracy. The commonly accepted view of the emergence of a racially egalitarian armed forces during that era was far from accurate. Radio programming made it seem so to minimize potential rebellion among the much needed black manpower in the war front. It also mollified the black press which believed such coverage will give the blacks enhanced socio-economic standing after the war.

Public space, private face: audience construction at a noncommercial radio station

Article Abstract:

Government-owned radio stations usually tailor their programs to the cultural and local preferences of their assumed community of listeners. However, the programming influence is not one way. This means that just as the stations are affected by the identity, tastes and interests of its listeners, so do the listeners' tastes and interests, even their conception of their local identities get affected by the programs they listen to. Such effects were investigated in the case of the New Mexico-based station KUNM.
