November debut for Gold Classics
Article Abstract:
UK Gold Classics, a new television channel in the UK, is slated to roll out on digital satellite, on November 1, 1998. The channel, which will transmit every Friday, Saturday and Sunday, from 6PM to 2AM, results from the UKTV joint venture between Flextech Television and BBC. Packaged as a rerun service for shows that has already been transmitted on UK Gold, the new channel is scheduled to venture into the digital cable arena, upon the launch of the first services in 1999. In its first-night programming roster, UK Gold Classics will feature Worzel Gummidge, a children's comedy show; The New Statesman, a political sitcom; and the Glaswegian police drama, Taggart.

Discreet Logic slashes cost of Smoke editing system

Discreet Logic intends to sell its Smoke editing and effects systems at a lower price from 250,000 pounds sterling in an effort to expand sales. Smoke will now be commercially sell for 95,000 pounds sterling or $159,000 per system that runs using Octane SE workstation from Silicon Graphics (SGI). Smoke using SGI's Octane MXE workstations sells at about 117,000 pounds sterling per system. Discreet, which disclaim that the price cuts was a response to very low sales, also offers new users of Smoke free scheduled training at its offices in Montreal, Canada, Los Angeles, CA, and London, UK, beginning November 2, 1998.
