Article Abstract:
Public service broadcasting is being challenged throughout Europe. Governments are facing up to the economics of a newly competitive industry. The German coalition government is set to examine the privileged positions held by ZDF and ARD who both carry advertising as well as being funded through licence fees. The new president of France Television, Xavier Gouyou-Beauchamps, is preparing to fight against demands for full privatisation of its two channels. The situations in Italy, Spain, Scandinavia and the Benelux countries are also outlined.

Who will win the viewer's vote?
Article Abstract:
British television broadcasters will have to work hard to retain viewers during the run up to the general election on May. 1, 1997 because political programmes are not very popular. Programme makers may choose to produce political material which is more acceptable to the general public by injecting entertainment value. Others may prefer to continue with traditional methods of political reporting to cover the general election. Specific political issues such as homelessness are particularly interesting to the general public, however.
