Chairman of Virgin Communications, Robert Devereux, has taken a 20% holding in the Virgin bid for Channel 5 television. Devereux is also planning to extend the radio business into Europe; with plans to open post-production businesses in Spain and France, and a possible move into film distribution and production. The group currently boasts sales of over 1 billion pounds sterling. A profile of Devereux and Virgin Communications is given.

Article Abstract:
Some observers have been claiming that serious documentaries are being eclipsed by more populist programmes, but this is in fact not the case. Primetime documentary programming has remained very stable over the last 10 years, and output has not become significantly more 'tabloid' in nature. However, new documentary styles have emerged, especially 'fly-on-the-wall' formats, and overall quality has greatly improved.
