Politics to go
Article Abstract:
Radio coverage of the Scottish devolution will be increased on the final days leading up to the referendum on Sept. 11, 1997. Radio broadcasting on the issue of devolution had been limited due to the fear of boring audiences and because the campaign against devolution has had few prominent supporters. The British Broadcasting Corporation Ltd Radio Scotland has had problems in maintaining an equal output for both sides of the argument. Radio Scotland intends to increase its output with phone-in and current affairs programs. Local radio stations intend to focus on local issues.

Local's loss?
Article Abstract:
Many BBC local radio stations are to move towards programme sharing in the evenings in order to cut costs. In the south of England, this will mean that BBC Thames Valley FM, BBC Southern Counties Radio, BBC Radio Kent and BBC Solent broadcast the same output for six hours from 7pm on weekdays. This approach has prompted opposition from some listeners, who feel that it goes against the BBC's commitment to local broadcasting. The BBC argues that audience levels drop considerably in the evenings, and that resources are better used for programmes during the day.
