Radio and the fall of Communism: did BBC broadcasts make a difference?
Article Abstract:
It was very difficult for the BBC to know how influential its radio broadcasts to Eastern and Central Europe and the Soviet Union really were. However, by the end of the 1980s it became clear that providing free information was playing a useful role in encouraging people to question Communism. It is now known that, by the early 1980s, Soviet citizens no longer took the trouble to disguise the fact that they listened to foreign radio stations. The BBC played a key part in encouraging people in Eastern and Central Europe and the Soviet Union to judge critically.
