Drowning in spin: politicians and reporters in dubious dialogue
Article Abstract:
Technological and cultural changes have had a significant impact on the traditional political press. It seems that the key role of journalism - supplying perspective - has been replaced by the need to attract an audience for advertisers. A presidential election is a very appropriate time to re-establish journalism as a force in democracy, but the coverage of the 2000 election has so far been fuelled by spin and rumour, with the key issues being overlooked. The political press is no longer distinguishable from the campaign industry.

Covering the coverage
Article Abstract:
It is already clear that journalists have made a number of mistakes in covering the 2000 presidential election campaign. They have been misguided in over-emphasizing the results of straw polls, and have failed to correctly interpret the real polls. Furthermore, they have assisted those determined to spread rumours about the candidates. The coverage of the 2000 campaign started earlier than ever, and at times political journalists acted as catalysts of the contest they were reporting.
