Ski doc and travel for BBC features
Article Abstract:
BBC has commissioned In Search of Shangri-La for BBC 2 and Ski Resort for BBC 1. In Search of Shangri-La is a 6 x 50-minute series that features Tibet expert Charles Allen's travel to the a faraway gorge, where the mythical Shangri-La is said to be located. Nicholas Claxton Productions will produce the documentary, which has a budget of over 200,000 pounds sterling. The other program, a 6 x 30-minute docusoap shot at the Val d'Isere ski resort, will focus on the French resort's hotel and chalet staff. Ski Resort will be aired in the autumn of 1998.

Indies gain entry to Open University for the first time
Article Abstract:
Open University (OU) will provide access to independent producers for the first time as part of the restructuring of its commissioning process and its relationship with the BBC Open University Production Centre. OU will allot part of its 10-million pounds sterling annual commissioning budget to the independents beginning August 1998. The budget is used to purchase around 160 hours of TV programming in addition to other audio visual output. A minimum of 20% of the commissioning budget is thought to be accessible to independent producers

Collins cast in BBC holiday rep drama
Article Abstract:
BBC 1 is casting Michelle Collins, the actress in the show titled EastEnders, in its drama series about the lives of holiday representatives assigned in Cyprus titled Sunburn. Sunburn is scheduled to begin shooting, which will last 12 weeks, in Cyprus in mid-September 1998. Collins will play the role of the head of the holiday representatives in the drama series, which will be aired in 1999. Sunburn, which was co-written by Mike Bullen and Sally Wainwright and produced by Kay Patrick, also stars Rebecca Callard and George Layton.
