ITV in 'largest' indie deal

ITV is commissioning SMTV:/LIVE, a 5-million pounds sterling 52 x 180-minute Saturday morning children program in its effort to attract younger viewers. The show will feature Geordie pop group, Ant and Dec. Nigel Pickard, ITV controller of children's and youth shows, said that the commissioning of the new program is the largest commission since the creation of ITV Network Centre in 1993. ITV will air the program beginning August 1998. SMTV:LIVE will be created by Ant and Dec Productions and will be produced by Granada Media Group head of music, Ric Blaxill.

BC Wales unveils slate worth L14m

BBC Wales has won commissions from BBC TV and radio networks worth a total of 14 million pounds sterling. The contracts, which include 11-million-pounds-sterling worth of over 40 hours of network TV programs for BBC 1 and 2, also calls for the production of over 500 hours of radio programs, valued at 3 million pounds sterling. The commissions will boost its production base enabling it to overcome BBC Northern Ireland and BBC Scotland. Among the programs to be produced are two new drama titled The Passion and a 6 x 50-minute series titled The Gatekeeper.
