Smith gives BBC dumbing down warning

The BBC's proposed plans to create new digital services, including two daytime children's services, have prompted seven broadcasters to express their concern to Department for Culture, Media and Sport Secretary Chris Smith about the government's process for approving new digital services. The industry wants specific criteria on which the BBC's proposed new services will be rejected or approved, as the outcome will have an impact on broadcasters as a whole.

The broadcasting union Bectu has a large membership at the BBC, ITV cable companies and among freelancers. It is now trying to become recognized by MTV in order to help employees with new employment terms and conditions. Adaptation to changes in the industry may be necessary to maintain its success.

BBC rules out new free sports channel

The BBC's new digital services will not include a free-to-air sports channel because of limited spectrum and funding. However, future plans could include the sports coverage.
