TPS beats Canal+ to Paramount deal

Canal+ has been unable to fight off competition from rival pay television operator Television par satellite (TPS) for the pay television rights to the Paramount catalogue. The deal between TPS and Paramount is believed to be the largest ever television programming deal in France, and is reported to be worth $500 million for Paramount over the next five years. TPS will use the programming for its pay-movie channels and pay-per-view services.

Canal+ profits down 48 per cent in 1994

Canal+ ofFranch, a pay TV company, saw net profit fall 47.8% to 626 million French francs in 1994, onconsolidated revenues up 10.3% to 9.5 billion French francs. Operating income fell 12.6% to 1.4billion French francs. The fall is attributed to increased programming costs, provision for itsproduction activities and increased depreciation charges on new decoders.

Canal+ forms three arms in shake-up

Canal+ of France, a pay-TV group, is to reorganise its management, with the appointment of Marc-Andre Feffer as vice president and head of the new executive committee. The new committee will handle the companies expanding operations both at home and abroad and will comprise three divisions.
