Taking Chances
Article Abstract:
Satellite broadcasting operation BSkyB is not attempting to squeeze its competitors out of the sector, according to deputy managing director David Chance. The company had a poor public relations record in 1996, but Chance dismisses speculation that a crisis is looming. He is not intimated by the prospect of growing competition, especially from cable, and believes that satellite will maintain its lead in the digital era. He does not feel that cable is better than satellite at offering interactive and Internet services.

Digital debacle
Article Abstract:
UK broadcaster BSkyB has decided not to take up its option on 49% of German digital package DF1. This has been prompted by a number of factors, including the slow take-up of the digital package, technical problems and poor marketing. Most significantly, problems were caused by the refusal of Premiere, Germany's leading pay television channel, to sign up to DF1. This in effect denied BSkyB the opportunity to gain an interest in Premiere.
