Taxing times
Article Abstract:
Taxation changes affecting the British television broadcasting industry may not occur before the next general election even though they are backed by both major political parties. Labour and Conservative tax policies propose a fairer means of taxation, labelled as the spectrum tax. The satellite channel BSkyB will pay an estimated 100 million pounds sterling more tax under the new system, once enforced. Politicians will shy away from imposing new taxes for fear of upsetting voters, say critics.

Radio chief slams BBC's new powers
Article Abstract:
It does not make sense that the BBC is no permitted to hold a commercial television licence, but is receiving new powers under the Broadcasting Bill which allow it to buy commercial radio stations, according to Sir Peter Gibbings, chairman of the Radio Authority. In order to take up commercial opportunities, the BBC would have to find a partner willing to take on the financial risk and would have to ensure that no licence fee money would be involved.

Always wrong?
Article Abstract:
The BBC's coverage of the UK's election campaign has been criticised as being 'too fair' by Labor Party leader Tony Blair's press secretary Alistair Campbell. He believes that the broadcaster may be following too precisely the Representation of the People Act in giving all main political parties equal coverage. The allegation illustrates the pressure broadcasters are under to achieve a balanced coverage.
