Socio-cognitive structures and television reception
Article Abstract:
TV viewers relate the information they receive to their own personal experiences, as shown by a study of Swedish viewers of a science program about the disease AIDS. The abstract scientific content of the program was not remembered so much as were associations with ubiquitous social events such as deaths and illness. This study reveals that social meanings intended for TV broadcast are interpreted by viewers in personal ways.
