The money men are in control of the ITC
Article Abstract:
The UK's Independent Television Commission (ITC) does not have a very impressive record of ensuring that the public interest is protected when ITV devises its schedule. Indeed, it is possible to ask how ITV could have been placed in its currently difficult circumstances if it had not been for the ITC neglecting its duties. Some observers feel that the ITC is no longer in touch with programming and that it is too dominated by chief executive Peter Rogers and chairman Sir Robin Biggam.

Media laws agreed by German states
Article Abstract:
New legislation agreed recently by Germany's 16 states will ensure that German media groups will be able to expand their broadcast holdings. However, the legislation, which will come into effect before Jan 1997, will contain certain restrictions, particularly in relation to commercial television broadcasters which reach more than 30% of the 'viewership market.' Some groups will be obliged to give up some broadcasting time to outside productions companies.

Kohl backs ARD closure
Article Abstract:
Chancellor Helmut Kohl has supported the closure of ARD of Germany, the public broadcaster, despite the opposition party's threats to retaliate by closing ZDF, the second public broadcaster. Heads of states have called for the closure so that they can concentrate on local programming, and ARD has been unwilling to reform.
