Volunteers: The doers and fixers
Article Abstract:
The National Wildlife Refuge System and other volunteer groups around the world that work tirelessly to improve their communities is discussed. AFS members have an excellent record of volunteerism and have started a new not-for-profit foundation with the goal of funding projects of interest to a broader public audience than professionals and scientists.

Article Abstract:
Taxonomy plays a critical role in species conservation has served to dethrone what was once a highly respected and sought-out form of expertise. Professional societies can play a role in promoting taxonomic research and recognition among their members.

NOAA's sea grant- a program for practical change
Article Abstract:
A visit to the Mississippi-Alabama Sea Grant Consortium (MASGC) illustrates the long collaboration between AFS and Sea Grant .It is concluded that MASGC is a much improved from the one evaluated in 1998 and is moving in the right direction.
