Winning tape
Article Abstract:
The announcement by Panasonic and Sony that they have both received orders for their respective digital camera formats has intensified the battle over which equipment will become the global standard. NBC of the US has ordered Panasonic's DVCPro equipment, while French broadcaster France 2 has signed a deal for over 200 of Sony's Betacam SX camcorders and VTRs. More significantly, ITN, a key player in the world newsgathering market, has ordered 32 DVCPro camcorders and other equipment, which could prove to be the deciding factor in the race.

Cutting corners
Article Abstract:
Production staff are concerned that producers may use inexpensive cameras and technological equipment in order to reduce costs. Some industry observers fear that cheap equipment will lead to poor quality output whilst others suggest that sub-standard output is due to the production staff who lack the necessary skills. The broadcasting authorities are concerned that the quality of some material, which has been shown on television, does not meet a high enough standard.
