Yorkshire's rollercoaster ride

Yorkshire Television (YTV) Director of Programmes is John Whiston. He has been put in place by the station's new owners, Granada, who paid 711 million pounds sterling for YTV, in the summer of 1997. The company had been facing internal boardroom disputes during 1995-97 despite having several popular shows, such as A Touch of Frost and Heartbeat. The station was launched in July 1968. It initially faced some difficulties with its equipment and by overspending on too many shows but soon became established as producers of some of the best liked programmes on network television.

End of the old boys' network
Article Abstract:
The British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) is expected to announce its new governing body in June 1998, after several retirements have lead to a re-organization of the governor system. Over 400 people have applied for to join the Board, whose main aim is to represent licence-fee payers who fund the BBC. The job of director general is being vacated by John Birt, who will leave the BBC in March 2000. The BBC is hoping to employ someone from a minority group on the Board and more women.
