Battle for an Najaf, August 2004
Article Abstract:
The battle to liberate the old city Najaf, which integrated the Marine air-ground task forces with Army mechanized battalions, Iraqi Security Forces (ISF) ground forces, and U.S. Navy and U.S. Air Force close air support (CAS), has improved the living conditions for the city's residents and opened the Imam Ali Shrine and mosque complex for prayer during Ramadan. The conditions that caused Najaf to become a fertile recruiting ground for insurgents and several lessons learnt by the newest marine or soldier are analyzed.
