'Beach connectors': Long term U.S. amphibious alternatives LSD (X), MPF (F)
Article Abstract:
The U.S. Navy is expected to maintain a fleet of 36 amphibious warfare ships, but the cancellation of plans to build a 'San Antonio' class (LPD-17) ship under fiscal year 2008 shipbuilding budget has jeopardized the ability to sealift Marines to worldwide conflicts and humanitarian crises. The consequences of cancellations, greatly reduced fleet for the next decade and the Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld's plans for the future amphibious force levels are discussed.

LPD 17 leads to dramatic changes in design, systems integration
Article Abstract:
The US Navy expects the delivery of the new LPD 17, San Antonio-class amphibious transport dock ship that marks both a dramatically new approach to ship design and a new degree of support for the shipbuilding industry. The Navy developed a three-dimensional computer-assisted modeling process for ship design that 'provides tremendous utility in accomplishing design development for future upgrades'.
