Bringing replenishment into line with modern warfare
Article Abstract:
Underway replenishment (UNREP), the replenishment of warships at sea, is one of the least glamorous operations of naval warfare but it is one of the most vital. The speed by which a war vessel can return to effective combat duty is dependent on the speed by which UNREP is performed. With the projected decrease in the manning complement of the newer naval vessels, the labor-intensive nature of UNREP activities requires careful planning.

UK and Russia strengthen links at sea
Article Abstract:
A joint deployment of ships is expected to be the outcome of the recent development in forging stronger ties between the Russian Navy and the UK Royal Navy (RN). The deployments is projected by the RN to be confirmed when UK's Chief of the Naval Staff and First Sea Lord Adm. Sir Jock Slater visits Russia in September 1998. The joint deployments could promote joint planning for possible peacekeeping, humanitarian and seach-and-rescue operations. Most recently, the RN's Type 23 frigate HMS Norfolk and the Russian Sovremenny class destroyer Bespokoiny met to exchange crew visits and helicopters, and to perform a joint search-and-rescue exercise.

Sales record for Harpoon and a new lease of life
Article Abstract:
Boeing Co. Military Aircraft and Missile (A&M) Systems gave the Harpoon anti-ship sea-skimming missile a new lease in life under the Block II programme. The new version of the anti-ship missile will bring an additional limited land attack capability and enhanced guidance package. Block II Harpoon will feature a new guidance shell, improved guidance unit, a new Global Positioning Systems antenna, reduced missile error and the same dimensions of its predecessor. The new missile's most touted improvement is its capability of hitting land targets with 10m accuracy, Boeing claims.
