COMINT goes to cell hell
Article Abstract:
Wireless communications, particularly the cellphone, are gaining wide usage among the national and military intelligence community, including criminal and terrorist uses, battlefield C3 and strategic communications. The cellular radio, which is the more correct term for the cell phone, offers two distinct features that would either result to advantages or disadvantages. The growing use for cellular phones is being attributed to the system's cheaper and easier acquisition, as well as the greater effort required for the monitoring of conversations. Although renowened for providing more private conversations, wireless media, however, is more susceptible to tapping compared to old-fashioned telephone land lines. The growing networks for wireless systems paved the way for wider and larger area for COMINT exploitation.
