LPD 17: the beginning of the future for navy shipbuilding
Article Abstract:
The design and development strategy for the LPD 17 amphibious assault ship has been innovative. The ship was envisioned from the start to be a transport carrier for Marines, to assume a greater role in littoral warfare and to reduce US Navy's cost regardings its systems, manning and performance. The LPD's Shipwide Area Network integrates management, maintenance and combat system and is truly an innovation in shipboard systems integration.

The Naval Sea Systems Command (NAVSEA) has adopted Lean Six Sigma to improve efficiency and effectiveness and institutionalize a culture of continuous improvement by focusing on necessary activities and participation, and abolishing useless procedures.
