Out of reach
Article Abstract:
New long-range, autonomous missiles are expected to be next generation of US air-to-surface weapons. As air defenses get more sophisticated, the need for long-range missiles becomes more essential to keep US fighter airplanes and bombers well out of reach of enemy missiles. A program that the Air Force and Navy is currently undertaking toward this goal is the Joint Air-to-Surface Standoff Missile.

Counter-SAM tactics: after 30 years, shoulder-fired IR missiles still a threat to US aircraft
Article Abstract:
Man-portable air defense systems (MANPADS) in the form of shoulder-launched missile launchers continue to pose a threat to slower, low flying aircraft and to any aircraft landing or taking off from an airport. The US military has plans to equip most of its vulnerable aircraft with countermeasure systems such as the Advanced Threat Infrared Countermeasures system but the equipment at this point has largely not been deployed yet.
