Denel to defend South African corvettes
Article Abstract:
Denel, the South African state-owned arms manufacturer, will supply its Umkhonto surface-to-air missile system to the South African Navy. The vertically launched system, to be delivered by the company's Kentron unit, will be installed on the navy's four MEKO frigates that have been ordered from Germany. The missiles, part of the nation's $6.45-billion defense acquisition program, will provide defense for the corvettes at 12,000 m at speeds of over twice the speed of sound.

South Africa secures naval procurement scheme
Article Abstract:
The South African Navy will spend R12.271 billion ($2.02 billion) to acquire four Meko A-2000 patrol corvettes and three Type 209/1400 diesel electric patrol submarines. The corvettes will be supplied by a German consortium composed of Blohm + Voss GmbH, Thyssen Rheinstahl Technik GmbH and Howaldtswerke-Deutsche Werft AG. Meanwhile, The German Submarine Consortium composed of Thyssen Nordseewerke, HDW and Ferrostaal will deliver the three submarines.

South Africa develops VLS SAM
Article Abstract:
Denel subsidiary Kentron is developing the Umkhonto system, which involves vertically launched surface-to-air missiles (SAM) to be utilized in South Africa's new patrol corvettes that are slated to be used in 2002. The system will be used for point defense against aircraft and missile attack and will be complemented by the twin 35mm dual-purpose gun that is being designed by Denel's LIW unit.
