Directly--"... from the sea"
Article Abstract:
Maritime Prepositioning Force (MPF) ships of the future are envisioned to rely less on ports and airfields, which are easy targets for enemy forces. Upcoming MPF ships will be well-stocked, with the capacity for indefinite sustainment for the Marines, and will be resupplied at sea by merchant ships. Although MPF ships can perform independent missions, they are projected to complement the Navy's amphibious ships as they lack the state-of-the-art self-defense and command-and-control attributes of amphibious ships.
