The article present international trends in naval surface propulsion systems. Despite research and development of advanced systems such as electric propulsion and waterjet technology, the diesel engine is expected to continue to be the workhorse of most of the world's navies.

Netherlands orders support vessel for work in the Caribbean
Article Abstract:
The Netherlands Ministry of Defence has given a contract to Damen Shipyards to build a new logistic support vessel for the Royal Netherlands Navy (RNLN). The vessel, which is to be named HrMs Pelikaan (A 804), is to replace the current HrMs Pelikaan (A 801) and is much faster than the existing vehicle.

Dutch shipbuilders plot survival course through OPV and special mission niche
Article Abstract:
The naval shipbuilding industry in the Netherlands finds itself without orders for major surface combatants for high-intensity warfighting even as competing shipbuilders in Europe are building next-generation frigates and/or destroyers in 2006. Hence, Dutch shipbuilders have developed innovative technologies and a strong market position in the niche area of special mission amphibious, command and mothership-type platforms by launching the Enforcer-line platforms and the hi-tech Sigma-line of offshore patrol vessels (OPVs) for survival.
