East Timor prepares for post-independence security threats
Article Abstract:
East Timor is scheduled to gain its independence from Indonesia in 2002, but the United Nations has detected threats to that independence and plans to keep a peacekeeping force in the country for an indefinite time. East Timor's security is discussed.

Indonesia prepares for assault on GAM

A rebel group in the oil-rich Indonesian province of Aceh has begun a separatist movement. The government of Indonesia is expected to strongly resist the movement, by military force, if necessary.
