East Timor is scheduled to gain its independence from Indonesia in 2002, but the United Nations has detected threats to that independence and plans to keep a peacekeeping force in the country for an indefinite time. East Timor's security is discussed.

The Free Aceh Movement hopes to break Indonesian control of that province. Some observers are blaming the Indonesian military for an outbreak of crime and human rights violations in Aceh.
