The article discusses the new manual on counterinsurgency operations (COIN) of the Army are regarded as a superb piece of doctrinal writing. COIN is helpful and relevant to senior commanders in Iraq but lacks the most essential reality of counterinsurgency warfare for those trying to elucidate how to conduct the warfare.

Our COIN doctrine removes the enemy from the essence of war

The article stresses on the importance of focusing on the enemy and the environment in preparation for a possible combat, as opposed to the COIN doctrine that favors counterinsurgency operations which focus on the people and thus neglect the waiting enemy.
